My husband said, “Your money is yours, mine is mine.” So I stopped paying his family’s bills. One month later, everything changed.

My husband looked directly at me and said, “Your parents are your problem. Your money is yours, and my money is mine.” I smiled, accepted his rule exactly as he stated it, and immediately stopped sending his family $2,500 every month. Thirty days later, every one of them was panicking.Family bonding activities

When my husband, Daniel Whitaker, said, “Your parents, your problem. Your money is yours. My money is mine,” he delivered it like a judge issuing a final ruling.
We stood in our kitchen in Portland, Oregon, with my mother’s medical bill lying on the counter between us. My father had retired early following a stroke, and my mother, Elaine, had recently undergone a minor heart procedure that insurance only partly covered. I had simply asked Daniel whether we could temporarily reduce the amount we sent his relatives each month.

For three years, I had quietly transferred $2,500 every month to his parents, younger sister, and occasionally even his cousin. His mother, Linda, called it “family support.” Daniel described it as “being a good wife.”

I called it exhausting.
The money covered the gap in Linda’s mortgage, his father Robert’s truck payment, his sister Megan’s phone bill, and endless “emergencies” that somehow appeared every other week. I kept paying because Daniel always said, “They’re my family now, so they’re yours too.”
