My sister Rosie was born with Down syndrome, and growing up, I watched people treat her differently. But my best friend, Ben, was never one of them. He always included Rosie, protected her, and made her feel special. When we were young, he even promised he would take her to prom someday. Years later, instead of marrying me like everyone expected, Ben asked Rosie to marry him. I cried tears of happiness as my best friend became my brother and my sister found someone who truly loved her. When Rosie later announced that she was pregnant with twins, our entire family was overjoyed.
But the pregnancy became dangerously complicated. At 34 weeks, Rosie was rushed to the hospital, and doctors warned us that they were fighting to save both her and the babies. Ben never left her side. Then, moments before surgery, he pulled me into an empty hallway, grabbed my hands, and looked at me with tears in his eyes. “Before surgery, Rosie made me promise to tell you this only if she didn’t wake up,” he whispered. Then he squeezed my hands and said, “Now it’s time for you to understand why I really married her.” My heart sank as my mind raced through the worst possibilities. Had he married Rosie for money? For our family’s inheritance? Or had he only married her so he could stay close to me?
Ben seemed to know exactly what I was thinking. He pulled a folded sheet of paper from his jacket and told me, “It’s much worse than you think. You’d better sit down.” With trembling hands, I opened the paper and began reading. I barely made it through the first line before I screamed. What Rosie had written before going into surgery revealed a secret that changed everything I thought I knew about Ben, Rosie, and the reason they had truly built their life together.
